The West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) proudly celebrates its founding director, Professor Gordon Akanzuwine Awandare, who has been conferred with the prestigious Millennium Excellence Award (MEA) for Biomedical Global Finding Excellence.
The award was presented by the Millennium Excellence Foundation (MEF) under the distinguished patronage of His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, at a grand ceremony held at the Manhyia Palace in the Garden City of Kumasi.
The Foundation recognized Prof. Awandare’s outstanding contributions to the fields of infectious diseases and molecular biology, citing his remarkable impact through the establishment and leadership of WACCBIP. Under his visionary guidance, WACCBIP has secured over $40 million in competitive grants to support cutting-edge research, advanced training programmes, and the development of a new generation of African scientists.
His pioneering work in malaria research, leadership in Africa’s COVID-19 response, and his extensive global collaborations have positioned Ghana as a leader in biomedical science and health research on the continent.
In a citation accompanying the award, the Foundation described Prof. Awandare’s contributions as a "bright glowing lamp in the depth of darkness"—illuminating pathways for scientific discovery and offering hope across Africa and beyond. It also highlighted the enduring legacy of his efforts in capacity building, stating that his "profound impact will be forever immortalized by the giant footprints of [his] exemplary life."
Quoting the words of H.E. Nelson Mandela, the citation reminded all present:
“The greatest glory in living lies not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall. And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years.”
WACCBIP extends its warmest congratulations to Prof. Awandare on this well-deserved honour. His award is not only a personal milestone but a resounding recognition of the transformative power of African-led research and innovation. It is a moment of pride for the entire WACCBIP community and an inspiration to all who are committed to advancing science for the benefit of humanity.
